I’m sure majority of ladies would have heard about self breast examination but only few are actually practicing it or are doing it right!
Here, I will tell us what self breast examination is, how to do it, when to do it and its benefits.
SELF BREAST EXAMINATION; is a method used by a woman to examine breast manually by oneself in order to detect any abnormalities, lump or cancer.
BENEFITS ; it makes the woman to be familiar with her own breast . Familiarity with the breast will make the woman to detect any changes whenever they develop.
WHEN TO DO IT; for women who are still having their menstrual cycle(premenopausal women) , it should be practiced a few days after their menstrual flow when the breast will be least tender and lumpy because hormonal changes increase breast tenderness and lumpiness before menses .
For post menopausal women, they should pick any day of the month that they can easily remember e.g the first or last day of the month to practice self breast examination and they should adhere to it .
HOW TO DO IT:This will be discussed in steps(1-4)
STEP 1: stand in front of a mirror and start by looking at your breast in the mirror with your shoulders straight and your arms on your hip. what you are observing is- the size, shape and color , any swelling and visible distortion, dimpling and wrinkling of skin, redness or rashes, the condition of the nipples and discharges.
STEP 2: now raise your arms and look for the same changes as in step 1 above. this done while standing or sitting with one hand behind your head. this can also be done in the shower while bathing because the soap makes the skin to be slippery and easier to palpate. Here, you use 3 or 4 fingers to feel and palpate the breast using circular techniques. Then, press the chest tissue against the wall of the chest gently to be sure to palpate the axillary nodes in the armpit. Repeat the same thing for the other breast.
STEP 3:lie down in a comfortable position, place a pillow under the right shoulder to examine the right breast first or a pillow under the left shoulder to examine the left breast, use your right hand to feel the left breast and vice versa . keep the fingers flat and together, use a circular motion until you cover the entire breast from top to bottom, side to side touching your collar bone and armpit.
STEP 4: feel your breast while standing or sitting. It is easier when the skin is wet and slippery, so this can be done in the shower. Cover the entire breast using the same hand movements and check for the previously mentioned abnormalities!
I hope this helps someone.
