Hello dear, I really don’t want to assume that you are doing great, so tell me! How are you doing?

My blog posts for a couple of days would be about cosmetics. As a beautyentrepreneur and a makeup lover I was gisting with a friend, and along the line, we talked about the content of cosmetics and the effect they may have on our skin such as breakouts of unknown origin, allergies, chemical burns etc.  I am sure you must have had one of these reactions on your face before. So, she suggested (and I also thought of) doing a couple of posts about the ingredients of our cosmetics; the good and the bad!

Ok, we are taking this in bits and I promise to post it every Friday (I really want to do this).

The first one we are looking at is actually one of the ingredients of my Milani Primer and Absolute HD foundation!

DIMETHICONE: This ingredient is common in major cosmetic products. So, it will be good to know the magic it does and the side effects of such magic. Dimethicone is primarily, silicone oil with certain properties.Dimethicone (also be seen on written as polydimethylsiloxane or PDMS) is also called a silicone-based polymer.

For skin care products such as primers, foundations, and lotions, it provides a smooth application; it fills in uneven texture and fine lines, which helps to create smooth and flawless look. It also provides a protective cover on skin, which is supposed to help keep moisture in, leaving skin hydrated for a long time.

In hair care products, dimethicone is used to make hair smoother, particularly in conditioners and detanglers, where the ingredient helps smooth hair and make it easy to comb. Because dimethicone leaves a sort of covering on the hair strands, it can also make hair appear shinier.

I know you want to know whether it is safe or not?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR)  approved dimethicone for skin care/cosmetic products, and it is generally considered to be safe to use. The Skin Deep Database also marks this ingredient with a low hazard rating. Scientifically, it may not cause cancer or other obvious harm, but a prolong/constant use is not advised!

The possible side effects listed are dryness, slight irritation, and allergic reactions. The first concern with this ingredient is that it covers the skin. Manufacturers may think that’s a benefit, but it is not. Imagine having a thin, rubber-like cover over your face all day. Is it healthy? It’s not

There are other ingredients in this same class. They are;

  • Methicone
  • Phenyl trimethicone
  • Dimethicone
  • Cyclomethicone
  • Dimethiconol
  • Dimethiconecopolyol

They are all silicone based skin smoothers. So, watch out for them and use them minimally since they look unavoidable in almost all the brands.

Have you ever checked the ingredients of your cosmetics/skincare products? Or what do you look out for when choosing your skin care products? Have you had any break out using products that contain any of the ingredients mentioned above? Kindly drop your comment below and don’t forget to share with friends, we all need to know about this. Follow this blog and receive notification for subsequent posts (kisses)

I am The Sent Nurse,My real name is Adenike Oladmeji. I refer to myself as “the sent nurse” because I strongly believe I have an assignment not just as a regular nurse but to care for people in their lowest state beyond the physical needs. Also most of my patients fondly call me "the sent nurse"because of the way I have cared for them. The peculiarity of my profession for me is that it has moved beyond being just a nurse that takes care of the body, but one that takes care of the soul/mind and spirit of a human being. I care for the threefold man – the body, the soul/mind and the spirit. I am a very proud and enthusiastic registered nurse, and I currently practice with Roding Healthcare in Lagos, Nigeria. Added to my skill and expertise in taking care of your soul / mind, I am also a certified emotional intelligence, health/wellness and life coach. To further carry my message and passion for both my calling/profession and the three-fold man, I own a blog (www.thesentnurse.com) that focuses on faith and health related topics and discussions. I also speak at events, conferences and seminars, both Nationwide and Internationally. As an entrepreneur, I manage the operations of Ewaade beauty store (@ewaadebeautystore) , a beauty store that operates majorly via social media, providing quality cosmetics and beauty products to every female of all levels. At Ewaade beauty store, enhancing your true beauty is our goal because we believe there is no flaw in you (you are altogether beautiful). We provide you a balance of the best quality and cheapest prices.
