If I may ask, why do you eat whenever you eat?

For a while, whenever I eat, I am eating to quench hunger, satisfy my cravings, trying to get strength and keep moving … I can bet these are similar to your reasons too (lol).

While those reasons are not bad reasons to eat, that’s not all! Beyond all that, there is a part your diet plays in your mental wellness/wellbeing. Good nutrition is essential for our mental Health/wellbeing and a number of conditions can be influenced by dietary factors.

According to Felice Jacka (President of the international society for Nutritional psychiatry research) “A very large body of evidence now exists that suggests diet is as important to mental health as it is to physical health…

A healthy diet is protective while an unhealthy diet is a risk factor for anxiety and depression. Food plays/contributes to the development, management and prevention of few mental health conditions such as depression, schizophrenia, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder and Alzheimer disease. Also, our moods can be affected by foods we eat during the day.For example, foods that contain too much ofsimple sugar is not good for your mood: You must be wondering … How? Why?

Well It is simply because, when you consume sugary things it gets absorbed rapidly, which gives you a rush of high energy which may make you temporarily energetic/excited or hyperactive and later feel low / stressed , low, have a mood swing as a result of the production of insulin hormone (hormone in charge of sugar absorption ).

Eating Less sugar or more complex sugar, whole grain cereals, nuts, beans, lentils, fruits and vegetables are great because the sugars in them would be absorbed by the body gradually and this can help to stabilize one’s mood all through the day. Apart from that, fruits and vegetables contain Vitamin B1, Zinc and Folate which has been associated with mood control.

Beyond what we eat, when we eat and how we eat also matters. A good dietary habit keeps you healthy both physically and psychologically! For example, there is a way someone who is hungry feels, behaves or react and sometimes, it could be irrational! Haven’t you heard of this saying “a hungry man is an angry man”?lol…

which brought about the term “ hangry” lol! This is because the brain is always up (controlling every activities of the body which includes your thought and mood), just like every machine or even a car (the best car) needs fuel to run/move at every given time! So what you eat and when you directly affects the structure and function of your brain and, ultimately, your mood because food is the fuel of the body!

One way to detect this is to keep a journal on how you feel when you have not eaten, how do you feel all through the day when you eat breakfast? How you feel without breakfast (not fasting) etc.

We will continue from here in the next post where we discuss the food in details.

Tell me, have you noticed mood changes as a result of your dietary intake during the day?

Kindly share in the comment section, I look forward to reading from you!

I am The Sent Nurse,My real name is Adenike Oladmeji. I refer to myself as “the sent nurse” because I strongly believe I have an assignment not just as a regular nurse but to care for people in their lowest state beyond the physical needs. Also most of my patients fondly call me "the sent nurse"because of the way I have cared for them. The peculiarity of my profession for me is that it has moved beyond being just a nurse that takes care of the body, but one that takes care of the soul/mind and spirit of a human being. I care for the threefold man – the body, the soul/mind and the spirit. I am a very proud and enthusiastic registered nurse, and I currently practice with Roding Healthcare in Lagos, Nigeria. Added to my skill and expertise in taking care of your soul / mind, I am also a certified emotional intelligence, health/wellness and life coach. To further carry my message and passion for both my calling/profession and the three-fold man, I own a blog (www.thesentnurse.com) that focuses on faith and health related topics and discussions. I also speak at events, conferences and seminars, both Nationwide and Internationally. As an entrepreneur, I manage the operations of Ewaade beauty store (@ewaadebeautystore) , a beauty store that operates majorly via social media, providing quality cosmetics and beauty products to every female of all levels. At Ewaade beauty store, enhancing your true beauty is our goal because we believe there is no flaw in you (you are altogether beautiful). We provide you a balance of the best quality and cheapest prices.
