COSMETICS INGREDIENTS’ REVIEW: the glycols
While reading your skin care product ingredient lists (that is if you really do care to check), you may have come across a chemical called butylene glycol, and wonder what it does. Well, seeing the name, it is certain that this ingredient is not natural, and some skin care blogs already wrote that this chemical is a carcinogen (i.e it can put one at risk of developing cancer). But is butylene glycol really a bad ingredient? Since there are many others helpful skin care ingredient that aren’t derived naturally. To better understand butylene glycol, let’s look at how this chemical is used in skin care.
How is Butylene Glycol Used in skin care?
There are many reasons why skin care manufacturers may include butylene glycol in skin care products.
- Butylene glycol is added to skin care products to increase penetration by other ingredients in the product. For many skin creams and oils, the active ingredients have a molecular weight that’s too large for effective skin penetration. So, it is common for only a small portion of the essential ingredients to penetrate into the skin, causing the remainder to sit on the skin surface; and that is not good for skin health. By increasing skin penetration, butylene glycol can boost the overall effectiveness of the product.
- Butylene glycol is sometimes included in skin care products to make it thinner and absorbable.
- Butylene glycol can also act as a solvent, and make it easier for other ingredients in the formula to mixwell. This quality helps create a more consistentcreamy texture.
- Butylene glycol helps to retain moisture in lotions. It draws moisture to the skin from the surrounding atmosphere, butylene glycol can add needed hydration to skin cells and can even play a role in easing the appearance of wrinkles.
Products that Contain Butylene Glycol
Butylene glycol is used in literally thousands of skin care / cosmetic products because it is affordable and because it has series of effects on the skin. For example, it’s commonly formulated into moisturizers, foundation, primers etc
Does it have any side effect?
Although butylene glycol is highly beneficial for the skin, one of the major side effects from this ingredient is SKIN IRRITATION. Several studies suggest that this ingredient can cause a rash around the eyes and other forms of irritation in individuals with sensitive skin. Also, it may cause irritation of the nostrils/lungs if it is accidentally inhaled from products like hair spray.
This ingredient is in my primer product, and I have noticed rashes around the upper part of my cheeks.
This ingredient poses no cancer threat and it is safe to use. However, it is important to slow down on products especially when you notice any rashes after using such products that contain this chemical.
