Other Health Benefits of Banana

Hey there, it is #wellness Wednesday here and I decided to end the month with the conclusion on the Banana post. In my past post, I wrote about Banana as a remedy for treating stomach ulcer. In case you missed it, you can read it here.

Like I said in the previous post, Banana is powerful… it is not only widely consumed because of its accessibility but it is also healthy when consumed moderately.

In addition to treating/curing stomach ulcers, Banana also helps to:

  • Lower blood pressure and maintain a healthy heart: Bananas are high in Potassium, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6 and Fiber. Potassium helps to maintain fluid levels in the body and it also regulates the movement of nutrients and waste products in and out of the cells. Potassium also aids muscle contraction and nerve cells response. It keeps the heart beating regularly and can reduce the effect of Sodium on Blood Pressure (high Sodium level increases the Blood Pressure and Sodium is mostly consumed through table salt).  High Potassium intake also reduces the risk of developing Stroke and lowers the risk of death that results from Ischemic Heart Attack. An average adult usually doesn’t meet up to the daily required amount of Potassium recommended (i.e 4700mg). It is wise to take at least 11 medium size bananas daily, not necessarily at a go but in portions all through the day (1 medium size banana contains 422mg of Potassium).
  • Reduce the frequency of asthma attack in children: bananas may help kids breathe more easily.  Children who ate one banana a day had a 34% less chance of developing asthmatic symptoms, according to a new British research. The Imperial College of London collected dietary information from 2,640 children, ages 5 to 10, and found that banana-eaters were one-third less likely to encounter breathing problems like wheezing, difficulty breathing/tight chest. Other research suggest that children with low fiber intake are more vulnerable to the respiratory problems associated with secondhand smoke (remember that Banana is high in fiber). It is safe to give kids banana as mid day snack as it contains no Fat, no Sodium and no Cholesterol.
  • Lower blood glucose in persons living with type 1 diabetes and improve blood glucose, lipids and insulin in people living with Type 2 Diabetes.
  • Restore electrolytes lost as a result of Diarrhea: During episodes of diarrhea, electrolytes like Potassium are lost in large quantities making the individual feel weak. Bananas can replace these lost nutrients.
  • Boost mood and preserve memory: Banana also contains Tryptophan; an Amino Acid which studies suggest play a role in preserving memory and boosting one’s mood.
  • Prevent childhood cancer: Taking bananas, oranges, and orange juice within the first twoyears of life may reduce the risk of developing childhood Leukemia. As a good source of vitamin C, bananas can help combat the formation of free radicals known to be the cause cancer. High fiber intakes from fruits and vegetables like bananas are associated with a lowered risk of colorectal cancer in older adults.

Bananas are safe when consumed moderately just like every other good thing. However, too much of anything is bad and can put one at risk of other complications. In case of high or gluttonous consumption of Banana, one may experience bloating, gas, abdominal cramps, and it may even trigger migraines in people with migraines. It should be taken with caution by persons on Beta-Blockers(antihypertensive)medication as these can interact with banana and greatly increase Potassium levels in the body.
